Seventy-eight new medical interns – or first year doctors – have begun placements across the State’s public hospitals after graduating from their medical degrees, providing a boost to the Tasmanian health system.

The 2024 intake sees 48 interns start at the Royal Hobart Hospital, 23 at the Launceston General Hospital and 7 on the North West Coast across the North West Regional Hospital and Mersey Community Hospital.

Following completion of orientation programs with their new hospitals, the doctors have now joined their teams on hospital wards as an important part of the medical workforce.

During their first year, interns will rotate through a variety of specialities across the hospital, including the Emergency Department, surgery and general medicine. 

The majority of interns are local graduates who recently completed their medical studies at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), evidencing the strong ongoing relationship between the Tasmanian Health Service (THS) and UTAS.

Resident medical officers (RMOs) – doctors with one to three years of previous experience – will also begin new placements across the THS this month, with many of these having chosen to continue to work with the THS.
