Could a National DNA Test Save Lives in Australia? .

Monash University tested 10,000 young Australians in a pilot study and found 2% carried genes that put them at high risk for cancers or heart conditions. Most of these people wouldn’t have qualified for current government testing (newsGP).
Professor Mark Morgan of the RACGP said GPs will play a central role. “Right now, many high-risk individuals are missed because family histories are incomplete. Genetic testing could change that,” he said (newsGP).
Dr Jane Tiller warned that Australia is behind the UK and Singapore, which are already expanding public DNA screening programs (newsGP).
The team is now asking the Federal Government for $50 million to test 100,000 more Australians and plan a nationwide rollout (newsGP).
