The move aims to better embed Closing the Gap priorities into Australia’s mainstream health system. The AMA has welcomed the decision and supports efforts to build a health system free from racism and discrimination.

$450 Million Reform Fund

All governments have committed $450 million to support the new schedule. The funding will go towards priorities developed in partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector through a new Reform Fund.

Likely focus areas include:

  • Improving hospital discharge processes

  • Strengthening anti-racism strategies

  • Creating cultural safety teams in hospitals

  • Supporting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health services

  • Improving First Nations data governance

These changes aim to create lasting improvements across the health system and support better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
