Changes to Diagnostic Imaging Reports in My Health Record

Changes to Diagnostic Imaging Reports in My Health Record

19 Feb 2026

For most other imaging — including CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, mammography, and other X‑rays — access will now have a five-day delay (down from seven days).

Staged Rollout and Upload Rules

Immediate access starts only with limb X‑rays. Other imaging reports will continue with a short delay. From July 2026, pathology and imaging services will also have upload‑by‑default requirements, with a transition period to allow services to prepare.

AMA’s Role and Guidance

The AMA consulted extensively with members when the government committed in 2023 to allow patients to see reports shortly after upload. Doctors highlighted the risks of patients viewing complex results without context, such as misinterpretation, unplanned care-seeking, and extra pressure on practices.

The AMA supports better information sharing but emphasises that imaging reports are written primarily for clinicians. Patients are encouraged to discuss results with their GP or specialist to interpret findings alongside symptoms and medical history.

What Consumers Should Know

  • Delays are based on the type of test, not the result.

  • A delay does not mean there is a problem.

  • Reports are uploaded in written format only, not images.

  • Other portals may still allow access to images, which may not be presented with clear written reports.

Practical Tips for Practices

These changes may shift the timing of conversations with patients. Practices can minimise disruption by:

  • Setting clear expectations about when results will be discussed

  • Reminding patients that scans need interpretation — the report is a chapter, not the whole book

The reforms also highlight ongoing challenges with information flow between hospitals, patient portals, and GP systems. The AMA will continue advocating for consistent, integrated records to support safe and continuous care.

The Department of Health, ADHA, and the AMA will work together as implementation progresses, focusing on clinical safety, workable workflows, and clear communication
