Approval Extended to Allow HRT Patch Substitutions During Ongoing Shortages
23 Jan 2026
To help manage the ongoing supply issues, the TGA has extended the Serious Scarcity Substitution Instrument (SSSI) for these products until 28 February 2027. The extension allows pharmacists to supply an alternative brand or strength of estradiol HRT patches, where clinically appropriate, without the need for a new prescription.
The TGA says the measure is designed to support continuity of care while shortages persist. Detailed guidance on the shortage, substitution arrangements and key considerations for pharmacists and prescribers is available on the TGA website.
Further information on Serious Scarcity Substitution Instruments and how they are used during medicine shortages can also be accessed online.
