AMA Raises Concerns Over Midwives Performing IUD Procedures

27 Nov 2025

The AMA supports increasing access to LARC services, especially through general practice, but warns that permitting midwives to perform these procedures could fragment care and diminish the central role of general practitioners, obstetricians, and gynaecologists in women’s health.

“Procedures such as IUD insertion and removal are complex and may result in complications that require advanced medical training to manage,” the AMA submission stated. “A more effective solution is to address existing barriers in GP training, where many doctors are ready to provide these services but face long delays in completing accredited programs.”

The submission also recognised improvements from the first phase of the MRAC review, including higher MBS rebates and new item numbers, which have helped improve access and affordability for women seeking LARC. The AMA said these changes have positively contributed to women’s reproductive health and autonomy.

Last month, the AMA released its updated Women’s Health Position Statement, reinforcing the importance of access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare, including counselling, screening, and effective contraception.

The AMA encourages policymakers to focus on supporting general practitioners and specialist providers in delivering LARC services to ensure continuity and high-quality care, rather than expanding procedural roles to midwives.
