AMA President - Updates

21 Nov 2025

AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen provides the latest news and updates for members.

This week has been a reminder of the vital role doctors play in our healthcare system — using our training to manage complexity, diagnose effectively, and keep patients safe. I had the pleasure of attending the RACGP annual conference, GP25, in Brisbane last weekend, which was a wonderful opportunity to connect with colleagues and celebrate the crucial work GPs do in their communities.

Tickets for AMA26 are now on sale! The conference, themed Leading Change in a Connected World, will be held in Melbourne on 28–29 August 2026. Members can take advantage of early registration discounts and look forward to sessions on innovation, leadership, and collaboration.

Earlier this week, I appeared before a parliamentary inquiry into the Thriving Kids initiative, which aims to support children aged 0–8 with mild-to-moderate developmental delays and autism. I emphasised the importance of GPs in early intervention and ongoing care. Families trust us, and we are uniquely placed to identify developmental concerns early. Policymakers must recognise this pivotal role.

The AMA also met with Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand to address racism, including antisemitism, in medical schools and the wider healthcare system. The AMA maintains zero tolerance for racism and is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive environment.

During World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, I spoke publicly about the dangers of expanding prescribing rights to non-medical professionals without proper safeguards. We must avoid policies that risk patient safety and fragmented care. I also joined the RACGP in raising concerns about the Pharmacy Board of Australia’s proposed pharmacist prescribing consultation, which will now run over several weeks from mid-to-late January. Members are encouraged to participate.

I highlighted the urgent need to address public hospital funding and finalise the National Health Reform Agreement, and encouraged members to engage in the Clear the Hospital Logjam campaign to advocate for timely solutions.

This week also included presenting life memberships at AMA South Australia and meetings in Sydney with ASMOF to support doctors on industrial relations matters.

I look forward to updating members following our Federal Council meeting this weekend. Wishing you all a happy and restful weekend.
