AMA Holds Final Trainee Forum for 2025 on Supervision in Medical Training
20 Nov 2025
Chair of the Council of Doctors in Training, Dr Sanjay Hettige, noted that while supervision is central to medical education, the system is increasingly under pressure. The forum addressed key questions, including:
-
What makes a great supervisor?
-
Can trainees safely provide feedback on supervision quality?
-
Are supervisors adequately trained and recognised?
-
How can Colleges assess supervision quality during accreditation visits?
-
How can supervision become a fulfilling role again?
Dr Hettige highlighted the value of hearing perspectives from College Trainee Committee Chairs across specialties. He said there was broad agreement that the current supervision model’s sustainability is at risk, but optimism that with proper support and structures, it can be strengthened for future doctors.
A communique summarising the forum’s key insights will be released soon.
