AMA calls for improved healthcare for women and girls

13 Mar 2026

The United Nations’ theme this year, Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls, emphasised removing barriers so women can access equal rights and healthcare.

Federal AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said many women still face obstacles to care, including reproductive health services, menopause support, diagnostic tests, and participation in medical research.

“Women and girls in Australia continue to experience unfair treatment and unequal access to healthcare,” Dr McMullen said.

She noted that despite government funding, reproductive health services are still difficult to access for many, particularly for those in rural and remote areas, while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women face ongoing health inequalities.

The AMA’s position statement on women’s health outlines key areas that need urgent attention to ensure all women have fair access to essential healthcare services.
