AMA Calls for Adequate Funding for Private Maternity Services
22 Jan 2026
The statement highlights the need for sufficient Medicare (MBS) and private health insurance rebates to ensure safe, high-quality, and sustainable private maternity care.
The AMA says government policies must provide the right incentives for patients to access private maternity services led by the doctor of their choice. This includes ensuring private health insurance products offer affordable maternity cover that is available when needed.
The statement also points to the current inadequacy—and in some cases, absence—of relevant MBS and insurer rebates, particularly in areas like paediatrics. The AMA calls for these rebates to be addressed immediately and indexed annually to reflect the rising costs of maternity care.
