Ahpra Reviews Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Concerns

23 Feb 2026

This follows complaints about care provided by former Melbourne-based obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Simon Gordon.

Ahpra cannot publicly discuss details of ongoing investigations but emphasises that patient safety and harm prevention are its top priorities. Investigations into complex medical matters draw on specialist clinical advice and may be reconsidered if new information emerges.

Currently, Ahpra is commissioning a panel of independent medical experts to support the review. The agency is also reviewing its overall methodology for assessing and managing these types of cases, ensuring investigations are rigorous, fair, and timely.

Ahpra acknowledges that raising a notification can be distressing. Its trained staff aim to provide a person-centred approach, with support from pathway navigators who guide patients through the process. The Notifier Support Service, previously focused on sexual misconduct cases, is now being expanded to assist women with concerns about endometriosis and pelvic pain care.

Patients with concerns about their healthcare can contact Ahpra on 1300 361 041 or lodge an enquiry online.

Healthcare practitioners and employers are also required to notify Ahpra if they believe another practitioner is placing the public at risk by departing from accepted professional standards, under the National Law.

Background

The Medical Board of Australia expects doctors to follow professional standards, including applying relevant clinical guidelines. Clinical guidance for endometriosis is set by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).

RANZCOG released its first guidelines on endometriosis diagnosis and treatment in 2021. The Australian Government tasked RANZCOG in 2022 with updating the guidelines into a living format to reflect the latest evidence. The most recent update was in May 2025.
