Aboriginal-Led GP Training Trial Starts in Rural Queensland

06 Mar 2026

The $2.4 million Single Employer Model (SEM) trial will see up to six GP and Rural Generalist registrars train in the Charleville region. They will work with CWAATSICH, the South West Hospital and Health Service, and Acacia Community Practice, in partnership with the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC).

The SEM guarantees registrars income and employment benefits similar to hospital-based training. RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chair Dr Karen Nicholls said the model is a “fantastic opportunity” for doctors while benefiting the local community.
