A New Cohort of Doctors Begins Their Journey in Tasmania

22 Jan 2026

Earlier this month, 80 first-year doctors started work across the state, with the total expected to grow to 100 as more interns arrive in the coming months.

Throughout the year, these interns will gain hands-on experience by rotating through key specialties such as Emergency Medicine, General Surgery and General Medicine. They will work alongside senior clinicians who will support their learning and professional development.

Tasmania continues to be an attractive place for doctors at the beginning of their careers, offering strong clinical exposure, quality teaching and the chance to make a real difference in local communities.

Most of the new interns are recent graduates from the University of Tasmania, joined by colleagues from interstate and overseas. All have taken part in orientation programs to become familiar with their hospitals and teams and have now started work on the wards.

In addition to the new interns, hundreds of Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) — doctors with one to three years of experience — have commenced new rotations across Tasmania this month. Many have chosen to continue their careers with the Tasmanian Health Service.

We congratulate all the new interns and RMOs and wish them well as they begin the next chapter of their medical careers.
