It's DonateLife Week this week

Tasmania,

Alert Status:
Active
Issued Date:
28 Jul 2025

DonateLife Week is the national public awareness week that runs from Sunday 27 July to Sunday 3 August.

This week we want all Australians to register as organ and tissue donors and be the reason someone else gets a second chance at life.

Help us spread the word about organ and tissue donation by talking about it with your friends, family and loved ones, at your local sports club, workplace, cafe, and in your community.

We know that 4 in 5 Australians say they support donation, but only 1 in 3 are registered to be a donor on the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Join the register today at donatelife.gov.au - you could be the reason someone else gets a second chance at life.

Make sure you let your family now you are registered, and encourage others to join too.

Your family will always be asked to support your decision before organ donation goes ahead. They are much more likely to agree if they know you want to be a donor.

To help us spread the word about organ and tissue donation during DonateLife Week, there’s resources and information available atDonateLife Week | DonateLife

Organ and tissue donation in Tasmania

Tasmania achieved world-leading donation and transplantation outcomes last year, reflecting the incredible generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families who said yes to donation.

This is also due to the dedicated support of hospital staff statewide, clinical champions, and the DonateLife organ and tissue donation teams who work to maximize every opportunity to save a life through transplantation.

Forty-nine per cent of Tasmanians 16 years and older have already joined the donor register, but we would like to see that number grow.

Fast facts

Trend data shows that 8 out of 10 families will consent to donation if you are a registered donor.

This number drops to 4 out of 10 if they don’t know you wanted to be an organ and tissue donor or you haven’t registered.

There are currently around 1,800 Australians on the organ transplant waitlist and 14,000 more on dialysis for kidney failure who need Australia’s help.

Transplant recipients come from different backgrounds, and experience different health issues, but they’re united in their gratitude for donors and their families.

It doesn’t matter how healthy or old you are, everyone over the age of 16 can register.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and change the lives of many more through eye and tissue donation.
