The Victorian Government has expanded access to the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, making it free for more people visiting high-risk areas. The temporary expansion runs until 30 June 2026.
People aged 2 months and older who plan outdoor trips like camping, fishing, or boating in affected regional areas can now get vaccinated. This comes as mosquito activity remains high due to recent flooding.
Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquito bites and, while rare, can cause serious illness. Residents, workers, and travellers are urged to get vaccinated if eligible and take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
